Finite-amplitude instability of the buoyancy boundary layer in a thermally stratified medium

چکیده

The finite-amplitude instability of the buoyancy-driven boundary layer is considered on a vertical plate immersed in thermally stratified ambient medium, where wall and surrounding fluid have different temperature gradients. Although linear stability this configuration has been investigated, solution arising from critical studied only for specific parameter values. We extend by using amplitude expansion method. primary bifurcations to two-dimensional least unstable mode gradient ratios ( $0 \leqslant \lambda 10$ ) Prandtl numbers $10^{-1} Pr 10^{4}$ are investigated. Only supercritical found occur when < 2$ $Pr 2800$ , while subcritical also larger values ratio number. Analysis contribution nonlinear terms Landau coefficient reveals that interaction modification mean flow second harmonic velocity with fundamental plays an important role bifurcation. Based equation, threshold equilibrium discussed as well. These encouraging results should be helpful understanding such system.

Hydromagnetic Instability of Stratified Rivlin-Ericksen Fluid in Porous Medium in the Presence of Suspended Particles

The stability of stratified Rivlin-Ericksen fluid in porous medium in the presence of suspended particles and magnetic field has been investigated. Upon application of normal mode technique, the dispersion relation was obtained. The important results obtained in this paper include the instability of non-oscillatory modes and the stability of oscillatory modes. Also, it was found that the system...

Mean velocity profile in a sheared and thermally stratified atmospheric boundary layer.

A stability correction function φ(m)(ζ) that accounts for distortions to the logarithmic mean velocity profile (MVP) in the lower atmosphere caused by thermal stratification was proposed by Monin and Obukhov in the 1950s using dimensional analysis. Its universal character was established from many field experiments. However, theories that describe the canonical shape of φ(m)(ζ) are still lackin...

Alpha effect due to buoyancy instability of a magnetic layer

Context. A strong toroidal field can exist in form of a magnetic layer in the overshoot region below the solar convection zone. This motivates a more detailed study of the magnetic buoyancy instability with rotation. Aims. We calculate the α effect due to helical motions caused by an unstable magnetic layer in a rotating density-stratified system with angular velocity Ω making an angle θ with t...

Shear layer instability in a highly diffusive stably stratified atmosphere

The linear stability of a shear layer in a highly diffusive stably stratified atmosphere has been investigated. This study completes and extends previous works by Dudis (1974) and Jones (1977). We show that (i) an asymptotic regime is reached in the limit of large thermal diffusivity, (ii) there exists two different types of unstable modes. The slowest growing modes correspond to predominantly ...

Convective instability of a boundary layer with temperature- and strain-rate-dependent viscosity in terms of `available buoyancy'

Cold mantle lithosphere is gravitationally unstable with respect to the hotter buoyant asthenosphere beneath it, leading to the possibility that the lower part of the mantle lithosphere could sink into the mantle in convective downwelling. Such instabilities are driven by the negative thermal buoyancy of the cold lithosphere and retarded largely by viscous stress in the lithosphere. Because of ...
